In response to a meme...
artaxastra posted the first line meme, and I just couldn't resist.

This is not a drabble, it's a snippet of a larger story which may or may not be written, and it isn't even vaguely polished -- I wrote it in a hurry, and was having trouble reconciling what I wanted to say with the words I could find.

That said, here's the snippet.

Once upon a time there were three sisters, all born in the same summer, all born in the same great palace beside the sea. The eldest was lovely, with flawless skin and waves of dark hair cascading down her back. She was strong and imperious and headstrong, and she was always first in everything. The middle was plain, prone to spots and uncontrollable hair, and her dark eyes seemed to swallow the light. She was friendly and pleasant, but there was something deep and still within her. The youngest was a true beauty, with laughing eyes and a kissable pout. Her smile lit up a room, and she was beloved of all who met her.
